Rabindranath’s success with the English Gitanjali is in a large measure due to the strategy he had devised which made him translate the Bengali poems in such a way that the music of the original could be recreated through the reiteration of key words and phrases. He said “I simply felt an urge to recapture through the medium of another language the feelings and sentiments which had created such a feast of joy within me in the days gone by”.
