Pandit sharda Sahai was born in 1935 in his ancestral home in kabir chaura , famous for being the musician quarter of the holy city of Benaras . It has been the home of an unbroken chain of male descendants of Pandit Ram Sahai, the innovative and charismatic founder of the Benaras gharana (lineage) , Sharda-jee continues to pass on his tradition to all who seek his guidance and training. From his birth Sharda jee was destined to follow his ancestors footsteps.One of his earliest memories is of hitting the tabla and his father giuding his hand so that he made a pleasant sound.His childhood was marred by the early death of his beloved father and eldest brother both tabla players with thriving careers.
Kanthe Maharaj who had been a student of Sharda-jee's grand-father,Baldeo Sahai, took over his tutelage.Achild prodigy,by the age of eleven Sharda-jee was acommpaning senior artist such as Ali Akbar Khan at major festival around India. By the time he made his first tour abroad in 1970 with Amjad Ali Khan he was considered to be the most promising tabla players of his generation.
Today Sharda-jee is a living legend. He has acommpanied every major Indian musician and dancer and several leading exponents of Carnatic music.He has worked with many major Western musician and composers including the percussion group Nexus, the avant-garde composer John Cage, one of his favourite musical experiences has been performing with World Drum Ensemble,a conglomeration of over one hundred drummers from around the world performing on the same stage.
This recording marks the second release of a live recording by Sharda-jee , the first being Gurukul: live at Saptak. Sharda-jee other recordings include the triology recorded by Audiorec-'Art of Benaras', 'Spirit of Benaras'and 'compositions of Benaras' .
An Evening with Pandit Sharda Sahai and Pandit Ramesh Mishra:
This memorable concert took place on 26th june 1998 in Coral Gables Congregational Church , Miami to a packed house . Since 1980 , Sharda-jee has been leading tabla retreats in North America , which always culminate in a finale concert for students and widerpublic alike . The audience was treated to a mehfil style recital by these two internationally renowned musicians .
