Vocal Classical
Sanjher Pradip
by Guy Beck
Guy Beck studied Indian classical music for six years in Kolkata, India, at the Tansen Music College. He is continuing his training under Pandit Arun Bhaduri of the ITC Sangeet Research Academy in Kolkata. He has also studied Bengali Kirtan, Sikh Shabads, and Haveli Sangeet. Performing vocal music for over twenty years, he has appeared on Indian TV (Doordarshan, 1993), Radio Nepal (1980), and in several All-India Music Conferences (1977,1980,1992). Guy Beck is one of the first Americans to become an exponent in the tradition of Hindustani vocal music, and the first to perform in a national music conference in India. He presently resides in America where he teaches and gives lectures and demonstrations of Indian classical and devotional music. The special feature of this Shabad, were learned in Kolkata. Thus this CD is an offering from Kolkata.
This recording features Guy Beck performing on instruments that have been combined in a multi-track system. Beck sings and plays the harmonium, provides a drone on the tanpura, a long-necked lute with four strings, and plays the hand-cymbals on the last two selections. The tabla rhythms have been provided by Ashwin Batish of California. The result is a special mix of Indian sound that takes the shape of a single 'voice'.
