Umakant - Ramakant Gundecha Gundecha brothers are India's leading exponents of the dhrupad style of music.They are among the most active performers of dhrupad in India and abroad. Born in Ujjain in Central India, both were initiated into music by their parents. They have recieved conventional university education and have studied dhrupad music intensively in the traditional Master-Student relationship under the renowned great masters-dhrupad vocalist Ustad Zia Fariduddin Dagar and also with Ustad Zia Mohiuddin Dagar, the distinguished performer of rudra veena(a string instrument), in dhrupad kendra Bhopal.
The Gundecha brothers have sung great poetry by Tulsidas, Kabir, Padmakar, Nirala in dhrupad style and have also composed music for several documentries.They have been broardcasting on British, U.S, German, Japan and French radio.So far H.M.V, MusicToday, Rhythm House, Soninaad, Senseworldmusic, U.K, IPPN Concerts Berlin, Navras Londan, AudioRec-Londan, Asia Music Circuit-London and Bol records U.S.A have recorded about 20 cassettes and cd's of their music. Singapore television has made an hour long film on the Gundecha Brothers.They have been awarded the National Fellowship from 1987 to 89, Ustad Allauddin Khan Fellowship in 1993, Sanskriti Award in 1994 and National Kumar Gandharva Award in 1998 by Govt. of Madhya Pradesh and Dagar Gharana Award in 2001 by Maharana Mewar foundation, Udaipur. Beside being an intergal part of all prestigious music festivals in India, the brothers have also performed at many prominent international festivals in U.S.A , Europe , U.A.E , Egypt , Australia, Japan ,Taiwan , Singapore,Seychelles, and Hongkong. At present the brothers are teaching in Dhrupad Sansthan, Bhopal.
