A devotee of Hindustani Classical Music, the foremost torch bearer of his father's Gharana, Shyamal Lahiri, son of a celebrated and the most illustrious musician Late Pandit Chinmoy Lahiri, was born at Kolkata in 1948. He started learning music in the later stage of his boyhood under the able guidance of his father and Guru, Late Pandit Chinmoy Lahiri. His spontaneous and innate aspiration for this Art and strong determination helped him in making a steady growth. His distinctive progress in Pure and Light Classical Music is owed to the long hours of tutelage under the caring hands of his father, Shyamal Lahiri has attained "studentship" by inheritance.

He has been giving regular public performance of Kheyals, Thumris, Bhajans and Ghajals all over the country. He has been serving as a regular vocal performer of Indian Classical Music to the All India Radio and Television for the last twenty five years. He is received very affectionately by the musical community all over the country for his gifted resonant voice rich with timbre. He is an accomplished artiste who is very analytical and innovative. He has a definite vision regarding the rendition of a musical note and has regularly been acknowledged for his delicate and unique placement of raaga from his heart and soul. This clearly establishes solidity in performance and in creation of serene mood, rich with a classical environment as a personal trait and unique style of the artiste.

In the later stage Shri Lahiri has also received training in Indian Classical Music from renowned musicologist Late (Dr.) Bimal Roy and in light classical music, from Late V. Balsara, the Maestro of Indian Music. He is deeply and sincerely involved in imparting training to students in order to keep the rich tradition of their Gharana pure and steadily progressive.
