Dr. Ruby Mallik was initiated in the art of music by Ustad Shabbir Ahmed Khan of the Agra gharana. She continued her training with one of the foremost musicians of this gharana, Ustad Yunus Hussain Khan. She received advanced training from the master musician of Agra gharana, Ustad Latafat Hussain Khan at ITC Sangeet Research Academy, Kolkata where she was a full-time scholar. She qualified for her M.A. and M.Phil in Hindusthani Classical Music from the Delhi University. She was awarded Ph.D in music by Agra University in 2003 for her research on the musical style and contribution of Ustad Latafat Hussain Khan.
Since 1989, Dr. Mallik started teaching music in Agra University. In 2004, she was sent on deputation as vocal music teacher-cum-performer at the M.G.I.C.C., Trinidad and Tobago by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations. At present, she is working as head of the Indian Classical Music Department at the Academy of performing arts in the University of Trinidad and Tobago. A devoted disciple of Agra gharana, Dr. Mallik is an exponent of musical forms like, Khayal, Thumri, Tarana, Dadra, Bhajan and other semi-classical forms.
