Classical Vocal
Golden Raagas
by Kumar Ray
Kumar Ray is like a breath of fresh air in today's world of classical vocal music. His voice is exquistely melodious, understanding of ragas impeccable, his presentation seductive. His gayaki is youthful and vigorous and his taans sang in full throated voice has a cascading effect, which is his own. Development of a style is rare today and in Thumri also, his interpretation has a fresh masculine flavour. His Kheyal renderings bear the stamp of his talim and gharana but are, in the final make-up, very personal and individual.
Kumar Ray's style is a fine blend of the Kirana and the Jaipur styles. He is perennially charmed by the complexities of Vistar and had over the years developed his very own Jhim or unhurried manner of elaboration. From the very first notes he is a treat fot the connoisseur and lay listener.
