Gouharbani Dhrupad
by Barna Maitra
Ms Barna Maitra has learnt Dhrupad initially from the last doyen of Vishnupur Gharana Sangeetacharya Satyakinkar Bandyopadhyay. After his death, she learnt under Late Ustad Naseer Aminuddin Khan Dagar for two years. She is still under the tutelage of Rasaraj Nidan Bandhu Banerjee, disciple of Late Ustad Mehdi Hussain Khan of Rampur and Late Pandit Amarnath Bhattacharjee of Betia/Vishnupur Gharana.
Her forte is Gouharbani style sung in an uncomplicated manner and tremendous control of laya, which is evident from her Dhamar renditions. She has a very large repertoire of Classical Dhrupad compositions of Baiju, Swami Haridas, Tansen, Anandakishore and Jadu Bhatta, the music mentor of Rabindranath Tagore. She is the founder member of ‘Dhrupadi’, an organization formed exclusively to promote and preserve Dhrupad and the classical compositions of Nayak Gopal, Baiju, Tansen, Dheeraj and other great composers. She had also made thematic presentations on Malhar, Purabi, Shri and other ragas showing the evolution of the famous compositions. Some notable achievements include revival of ‘Shankara Utsav’ after 70 years, organizing ‘Jadu Bhatta Sammelan’ in Kolkata and commemorating Gopeswar Bandyopadhyay’s 125th Birth Anniversary in Vishnupur. She has recently taken part in the 134th Harvallabh Sangeet Sammelan. She is now residing in New Delhi. She is a post graduate in English from Kolkata University.
